Trying Something New

IMG_5945_Recently I tried something new in one of my education courses. Every since I’ve decided to be an educator I’ve always seen myself as a 1st or 2nd grade teacher. I love that age group and I feel like it would be a great fit for me. Yes, I am fully aware that you don’t really have a choice what grade level your chosen school will place you in. In most cases you are place where the school feels like you are needed. Although you are full hearted in first grade they may just put you in fifth grade, because you are an EC-6 Generalist and that is where they need a teach like yourself. In my recent discovery i have discoreved i may enjoy teaching a higher grade level. In my ECED 4113 class my group has been assigned the four grade and so far I’m enjoying the grade level. Recently we did a mock class and it went beter than expected. We did a balloon activity that helped students learn the positions of the seven continents in relation to eachother and oceans. This activity made me realize that i should look deeper in all grade levels, i need to explore all the grade level i am trained to educate.

Professor Review

teacher-836767_1280I grew up in a home where school was one of the main focuses, my parents instilled in my sister and I that school is one of the most important thing I will do in my life. Early on I discovered my love for children, so of course I decided on becoming a teacher. I began my college journey at Lone Star Community College, and later transferred here to Prairie View A&M University. My first advisor was Dr. Hansen, then I was passed over to Dr.Warsame once Dr. Hansen retired. Ever since I was passed over to Dr.Warsame I’ve had a great experience in the department of education. She makes sure that all her students are taken care of, I can honestly state that Dr. Warsame is a wonderful professor and also a great role model. This semester I choose to be apart of her class, due to the great experience I had with her first semester. I feel like this will also be a great semester with Dr. Warsame and I am very excited for the upcoming semester.

This link expresses the reason why teachers are so important to our growing society.

Learning a Lesson Plan

In one of my education course we spoke about lesson plans. We spoke about what a lesson plan consist of and the proper way of creating a lesson plan. Madeline Hunter’s eight-lesson design was our main topic. The class was broken down into small groups where we all were assign a piece of the lesson design. Our common piece was the purpose(objective), which was students will know their  basic shapes. So far in one of my classes we have gone broken apart and modified lesson plans on the internet. We have been assigned groups along with a grade level, this will be the group we are with the whole semester. We all have been assigned to come up with two lesson plans (Math & Social Studies) for our grade level. I am excited to start working on this assignment just because its an important part in being a teacher. My degree Plan

notes-514998_640Looking through my degree plan I notice that there are a lot of qualifications we as teachers must complete. People in the College of Education must go through an extensive process to become certified. Not only do we have to do testing and many courses for the school but we also have tests outside of school we must complete and pass to become certified teachers. Students aspiring to get into the College of Education must hold a GPA of at least a 2.5 or better. Students are unable to have any grade lower than a D in their major classes. If teaching is something you truly want to do and you know this, then you should go on and apply to the College of Education.

Clicking this a link will take you to the degree plan for Prairie View A&M University the College of Education. The plan shown here is the older edition, the newer one has a few modification.

A Good Teacher Understands……

The first week of school posed some challenges, from waking up early to make it to classes to figuring out where the class is. Thus far my favorite part of the week was entering into one of my classes and with the excitement of going into another semester with Dr. Warsame. As class went on we learn that she has a little keepsake for everyone of us. As the class passes around a stack of narrow sheets of paper, Dr. Warsame announces she has made each and everyone of us a bookmark. On these bookmarks there is the name of the course along with a quote. After every student receives their bookmark we are instructed to stand introduce yourself and read your quote. A quote on one of the bookmarks is as follows “A good teacher understands…. As a general rule, teachers teach more by what they are than by what they say.”teacher To me the quote means that not only are people looking at what you say but also about who you are as a person in and out of the classroom setting.  A teachers appearance is just as important as what comes out of a teacher’s mouth.
